Creativity Innovation
Creativity innovation has to do with the process of coming up with new ideas and then testing them. Just
as writers craft rough drafts, artists sketch out numerous ideas for one drawing or painting, and musicians
record improvised jam sessions in order to continually come up with new material. People involved in
innovation need to engage in creativity sessions to spur innovative ideas. Creativity in innovation is not
brainstorming, because creativity has to be more than just abstract and cerebral.
Road Blocks That Kill Creativity
- The business-as-usual mentality and normal ways of looking at things need to be put aside.
- People's fear of failure and doubts about their Creativity abilities need to be overcome.
- Failure needs to be conceptualized as a method of learning new ways of doing things and coming up with
new ideas.
- The realization that change is a constant must be embraced instead of resisted.
Creating an Atmosphere of Creativity
In your business, if you're going to put together a creativity innovation session, the following are
certain elements and concepts that you should have present:
- Do away with clutter. You and your employees should get together in a neat room where there are
objects of beauty and/or works of art, or maybe go to a beautiful setting like a public botanical
garden. If you are surrounded by clutter your minds will be unclear.
- Try jump-starting ideas by introducing unpredictable elements into the mix. Innovators must
always be prepared for the unexpected
- Do not treat Creativity innovation sessions like a business-as-usual meeting. Instead,
instill an awareness in the group that innovation is not normal for most people; it is something that
needs to be worked on, and that means thinking outside of the normal parameters. This should not be
taken casually or lightly.
- Introduce provocations into the mix. Innovators must always be prepared for provocations and understand
how to use them to generate new Creativity ideas. Come up with "what if" scenarios that would demand
innovation, and see what your people come up with in response. It may be something you can use in the real
world.
- Make sure you encourage, and feel within yourself, a spirit of fascination. Once again, don't let
yourself or the others in the group fall into a "business-as-usual" mindset. This is much more than a
business meeting or a job. This is Creativity innovation, and for it to work there must be enjoyment,
wonder, and fascination present.
- . Let people come up with "failed" ideas. Also realize that when you do a test of many of your new
innovative ideas they will fail. Encourage people to not fear failing, but let them fail early and fail
often, then the absolute joy of succeeding becomes even more thrilling and exhilarating to them.
- Encourage your people to fall in love with change--but not change for change's sake, but to love it
because it's the only constant in the universe. Not all change is good, but if things never change they
stagnate and die.
Summary
Using the above dos and don'ts, you can create an environment for Creativity innovation.
With this environment, new ideas should flow freely
